Every time I disconnect my USB hard drive or USB flash physically, my other USB devices (most noticeably my USB wireless network adapter) would stop functioning, but a disable/re-enable or unplug/re-plug would get it working again. Today I googled this problem to death and still couldn’t find anyone who has this same problem. The closest problem that I found is “USB port may stop working after removing or inserting USB device“, while in my case the removing would influence all other ports, and in my case the port is still “reusable”. Still I tried the solution, and IT WORKED!

Start -> Run… -> regedit

Navigate to the following folder:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesUSB

Add a new DWORD entry:DisableSelectiveSuspend
Value:1

Restart computer.

Note: This solution applies to Windows XP and Windows Vista
