The long-waited Windows Vista SP1 (through Windows Update) is officially released, but not everyone can get it now. Why? According to Microsoft, there are 8 causes, including one like “because you already have SP1 installed”.. duh.
For many Dell laptop computers, the Dell’s driver for the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC is the culprit for blocking the SP1 update. Go here to grab a more recent update that will allow SP1 through Windows Update. After the update, restart the computer and wait a few hours, and then you should see SP1 available.

I need the updated driver as well, but I do not have a Dell system … could I use this same driver?

The setup file is for a Dell computer, so it may not work for you. Here’s the WDM extracted from the exe. You can try manually updating the driver from Device Manager to see if it works, and keep us posted!

Dell is being very slow to respond. They are suggesting I uninstall the audio driver, load SP1, then re-install the same audio driver. My concern is that if Microsoft is blocking the driver, then their must be something wrong with it, and I don’t want to reinstall a faulty driver. I wonder if they are even working on a updated driver.

I have uninstalled the SigmaTel driver, and installed SP1, but where can I find the SigmaTel driver again to re-install?

amae, thanks for the tip. That is the only way I could install SP1.
BTW, the latest release of the driver from Dell’s web site is 6.10.5614, released on 9/13/07. It makes absolutely no difference.

I have Windows XP on a Dell laptop and my system has shut down twice in the last two days. The error message I get is that it is due to the Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec. Could the Vista update be causing this shut down and would installing the update address it?

Now my Creative Soundblaster XFI speakers won’t work. New crappy speakers took over! What’s the matter with you Sigma people? I don’t even have Sigma anything. They don’t uninstall. Thanks for NOTHIN’!

@mickie and Blues1: I hope you didn’t install this unnessessary update? This post is about a workaround for people who can’t get the Vista SP1 upate…. You know the saying, “if it ain’t broke………..”….

Just wanted to point out that Amae’s solution is the only one that I got to work, and the only solution that I see anybody saying the same.

I have windows XP and accidentally deleted my Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC when sweeping my computer. I can not figure out how or where to download the software again.
Please let me know where I can download this, so I can use my computer normally again.

had this issue on my dell after SP1 update, found this link on my 1st google and followed Amae’s solution. Worked perfectly THANKS AMAE u saved me time and grief i’m used to with MS………….

Hi, buried in all this tech jargon lies the answer to my problem but i cant understand the details so HELP! I want to skype but i dont seem to be able to work the microphone – my laptop is XPS M1210 running on Windows XP – can i have a simple solution like downloading drivers?:)
